Tretinoin
The Gold Standard

All-Trans Retinoic Acid (ATRA) is the most studied retinoid for acne and photoaging. Proper introduction is the difference between irritation and transformation.

Tretinoin guide

Cellular Mechanism

Unlike over-the-counter retinol, Tretinoin does not require conversion by the skin. It binds directly to Retinoic Acid Receptors (RAR), instantly signaling cells to speed up turnover and upregulate collagen production.

↑ 300% Cell Turnover Rate
↓ 40% Collagen Degradation

Avoid Mixing With:

  • Benzoyl Peroxide Can oxidize Tretinoin molecules
  • Vitamin C (L-AA) Significant pH conflict / irritation
  • AHA/BHA Acids Compounded barrier disruption
  • Physical Scrubs Micro-tears during retinization

The “Sandwich” Protocol

For new users or those with sensitive skin barriers.

1

Buffer Layer

Apply a thin layer of basic moisturizer to damp skin. Let dry completely (15 mins).

2

Pea-Sized Active

Apply Tretinoin. Dot onto forehead, cheeks, and chin. Avoid eyes and mouth corners.

3

Seal Layer

Apply a second layer of moisturizer to lock in hydration and prevent TEWL.

Timeline of Expectations

Weeks 1-4

The Retinization Period

Expect peeling, redness, and the ‘purge’ (temporary acne increase). Focus on barrier repair.

Weeks 8-12

Texture Refinement

Acne begins to clear. Skin starts looking more ‘glowy’ as cell turnover stabilizes.

Months 6+

Collagen Remodeling

Improvement in fine lines and hyperpigmentation. This is the long-term maintenance phase.

When to halt application?

If you experience “Retinoid Burn” (raw, weeping skin, severe stinging upon applying moisturizer), stop all actives for 7 days. Focus on Cica-creams and Petrolatum until the barrier closes.
