Technical Glossary

Common Actives

AHA
Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Water-soluble exfoliants (e.g. glycolic acid, lactic acid) that smooth texture and brighten skin. Can cause mild tingling, especially on sensitive skin.
BHA
Beta Hydroxy Acids
Oil-soluble exfoliants (mainly salicylic acid) that penetrate pores to clear congestion and reduce breakouts. Good for oily and acne-prone skin.
RTN
Retinoids
Vitamin A derivatives (retinol, tretinoin) that boost cell turnover, reduce fine lines and fade pigmentation. Can cause purging or irritation when starting out.

Skin Conditions

ECZ
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
A chronic condition causing dry, itchy, inflamed skin patches. Flare-ups are often triggered by irritants, allergens, stress, or weather changes. Needs gentle, fragrance-free care and barrier support.
CD
Contact Dermatitis
A rash triggered by direct skin contact with an irritant (e.g. soap, fragrance) or allergen (e.g. nickel, latex). Causes redness, itching and sometimes blisters at the site of contact.
SD
Seborrheic Dermatitis
A common condition causing oily, flaky or scaly patches on areas rich in sebaceous glands — scalp, sides of the nose, eyebrows and ears. Often looks like facial dandruff. Managed with antifungal or medicated products.
ROS
Rosacea
A chronic condition causing facial redness, flushing and sometimes visible blood vessels or bumps. Common triggers include heat, spicy food, alcohol and stress. Requires gentle, soothing products and sun protection.
AR
Allergic Skin Reactions
Immune responses to ingredients like fragrances, preservatives or dyes — can cause hives, swelling or widespread redness. Patch testing new products helps identify triggers.
COM
Comedones (Blackheads & Whiteheads)
Clogged hair follicles caused by excess oil and dead skin cells. Blackheads (open comedones) are oxidised and dark; whiteheads (closed comedones) stay under the skin. BHAs like salicylic acid help clear them.

Skin Concerns

O
Oily
Skin that produces excess oil and may appear shiny; often benefits from oil-control and lightweight hydrators.
DR
Dry
Skin that lacks oil and feels tight or flaky; needs richer moisturizers and barrier support.
DEH
Dehydration
Skin lacking water (not the same as oiliness); hydrate with humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
AC
Acne / breakouts
Tendency to develop comedones or inflammatory pimples; consider non-comedogenic products and acne-directed actives.
SE
Sensitive / reactive
Easily irritated by products; favor gentle, fragrance-free formulations and barrier repair.
RO
Rosacea / flushing
Skin that flushes or shows visible blood vessels; avoid strong irritants and focus on soothing ingredients.
HP
Hyperpigmentation
Dark spots or uneven pigmentation often after inflammation or sun exposure; sunscreen and targeted actives help.
AG
Aging / wrinkles
Visible fine lines or loss of firmness; consider retinoids, peptides, and sunscreens.
BA
Barrier dysfunction
Compromised skin barrier causing sensitivity, dehydration, or irritation; focus on ceramides and gentle care.
PO
Large pores
Visible/enlarged pores, often with oiliness; prefer lightweight, pore-refining textures.
CB
Combination
Different areas show different characteristics, e.g., oily T-zone and dry cheeks; mix light and richer products as needed.
