Hyaluronic acid is a polymer composed of repeating sugar units (glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine). As more sugar molecules are added, the molecule grows in length and forms a spherical shape. It is naturally found within skin, connective tissue, and nerve tissue. Hyaluronic acid has a significantly higher water-binding capacity than other natural and synthetic polymers. Sodium hyaluronate and potassium hyaluronate are salts of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid has a history of approved medical applications, including use in eye surgery and osteoarthritis treatment, as well as dermal injections for temporary wrinkle reduction.
